Is Your Website Ready for AI Search? The 5-Point GEO Audit Every Fayetteville Business Should Run

The Problem: You Built a Great Website. AI Search Engines Still Ignore It.

You have a professional website. It ranks on Google. You publish content. You even show up in the local map pack for searches in Fayetteville and Cumberland County.

Then you ask ChatGPT or Perplexity a question about your industry — and your business is nowhere in the answer. Your competitor, whose website is not better than yours, gets cited instead.

This is happening to businesses across the Fort Bragg area, Hope Mills, and Raeford right now. Google AI Overviews appear in roughly 50% of search results. By early 2028, AI search is expected to eclipse traditional search entirely (Source: WSIWorld.com). If your website is not ready for AI engines to parse, cite, and recommend — you are invisible to half your potential customers.

The fix is not more content. It is not another blog post. It is making sure your website passes the tests AI engines actually run when deciding who to cite.

This is the exact 5-point GEO audit I use with my clients. It takes 30 minutes and tells you whether your site is ready for AI search — or whether it is leaking visibility you did not know you were losing.

What a GEO Audit Actually Checks

A GEO audit is different from a traditional SEO audit. SEO checks whether Google can rank your pages. GEO checks whether AI engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Bing Copilot — can understand, trust, and cite your content.

Five areas matter. Most sites fail on at least two. Here is how to check yours.

Check 1: Can AI Crawlers Even Access Your Site?

Before an AI engine can cite you, it has to be able to read your site. This sounds obvious — but many businesses block AI crawlers without realizing it.

Your 3-minute checklist:

  • Open your robots.txt file (yoursite.com/robots.txt). Look for lines blocking an enterprise-grade AI model-User, Google-ai, PerplexityBot, or Google-Extended. If any of these are disallowed, AI engines cannot read your content.
  • Check that your site loads in under 2 seconds. Every 100ms of delay costs 7% in conversions — and AI crawlers time out on slow sites.
  • Make sure your site works on mobile. Most AI searches happen on phones. A desktop-only site is invisible to AI.
  • Verify HTTPS is active. AI engines treat non-secure sites as untrustworthy by default.

Pass or fail: If GPTBot is blocked or your site takes more than 3 seconds to load, you fail this check. Fix it before anything else.

Check 2: Does Your Site Have Structured Data AI Engines Can Read?

Schema markup (JSON-LD structured data) is the single most important GEO technical signal. It translates your website content into a format AI engines can parse instantly — telling them who you are, what you do, where you are located, and what each page is about.

Pages with schema markup rank an average of 4 positions higher than those without (Source: Backlinko). And for AI engines, it is even more important than for traditional search.

Your 5-minute checklist:

  • View your homepage source code (right-click → View Page Source). Search for application/ld+json. If you find nothing, your site has zero structured data. Fail.
  • If you do find schema, check for Organization type — it should include your business name, address, phone, and sameAs links to your social profiles.
  • Check for LocalBusiness schema — this is what tells AI engines you are a real local business in Fayetteville, NC, not a generic website.
  • Check your blog pages for Article schema — author name, publish date, and headline should be machine-readable.
  • If you have FAQ content, check for FAQPage schema. This is what makes your Q&A directly extractable by AI Overviews.

Pass or fail: No JSON-LD schema on your homepage? Fail. No LocalBusiness or Organization schema? Fail. This is the foundation AI engines build their trust on.

Check 3: Is Your Content Structured for AI to Extract?

AI engines do not read content the way humans do. They scan for structure. They look for clear headings, answer-first paragraphs, and logical organization. Content that is well-written but poorly structured gets skipped.

Your 5-minute checklist:

  • Pick any service page on your site. Does the H1 heading clearly state what the page is about — or is it something vague like Welcome or Our Services?
  • Scroll through the page. Do you see a clear hierarchy of H2 and H3 headings? Or is it just walls of text?
  • Read the first paragraph under each heading. Does it answer the question the heading poses — or does it warm up with filler?
  • Do you have FAQ sections on your key pages? Each question-answer pair is a direct entry point for an AI conversation.
  • Check your content for dates. Is there a visible Last Updated or published date? AI engines heavily favor fresh, dated content.

Pass or fail: If your pages lack clear heading hierarchy, answer-first paragraphs, and dated content, you fail. AI engines will not cite what they cannot parse.

Check 4: Do You Have Authority Signals AI Engines Trust?

AI engines do not just evaluate your website. They evaluate your entire online footprint. They look for consistency, credibility, and third-party validation. This is called entity authority.

Your 5-minute checklist:

  • Google your business name. Is your Google Business Profile complete, verified, and consistent with your website? Mismatched addresses or phone numbers erode trust.
  • Check your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across 3-5 directories (Yelp, BBB, industry directories). Is it identical everywhere? AI engines cross-reference these.
  • Does your website have an author page with a real name, photo, and credentials? Anonymous content is the first thing AI engines filter out.
  • Search for your business on LinkedIn. Is your profile complete and linked to your website? AI engines use sameAs links to verify entity identity.
  • Are you cited or mentioned on other credible websites? Even one quality backlink from a local chamber of commerce or industry publication signals trust.

Pass or fail: If your NAP is inconsistent, your Google Business Profile is incomplete, or you have no verifiable author identity, you fail. AI engines will not cite a business they cannot verify.

Check 5: Do You Have a Citation Footprint?

The final factor is the hardest to control — but the most powerful. AI engines look for evidence that other credible sources reference your business. This is your citation footprint.

Your 5-minute checklist:

  • Search your brand name on Google News. Do you appear in any articles, press releases, or local coverage?
  • Check if your business is listed on Wikipedia, Crunchbase, or industry-specific directories. AI engines use these as entity verification sources.
  • Look at your reviews. AI engines weigh review volume, recency, and rating. A business with 50+ Google reviews and a 4.5+ rating carries significantly more AI trust.
  • Are you referenced in any industry publications, podcasts, or interviews? Each mention builds your AI authority graph.
  • Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity: Who is the best [your industry] in Fayetteville NC? If your business is not mentioned, your citation footprint is not strong enough.

Pass or fail: If you have no press mentions, no Wikipedia presence, and fewer than 20 reviews, you fail. Citation footprint is a long game — but it starts now.

Your GEO Readiness Scorecard

Count your passes:

  • 5/5 — Your site is GEO-ready. AI engines can find, parse, trust, and cite you. Focus on content freshness and citation growth.
  • 3-4/5 — You have a solid foundation but gaps in technical infrastructure or authority signals. Fix the failing checks first.
  • 1-2/5 — Your site is leaking AI visibility. Most businesses at this level are invisible to 50%+ of potential customers who search via AI.
  • 0/5 — You are not in the AI search game at all. The good news: your competitors are probably not either. This is your window.

Most Fayetteville businesses I audit score 2 out of 5. They have good content but no structured data. Their Google Business Profile is solid but their NAP is inconsistent. Their site is fast but their headings are a mess. The gap is rarely one big thing — it is four or five small things that together tell AI engines this business is not worth citing.

What This Means for Businesses in Cumberland County and the Fort Bragg Area

Local businesses have a unique advantage in AI search. When someone asks their AI assistant a question about a service in their area — Who is the best roofer in Fayetteville? Where can I find a marketing consultant near Fort Bragg? — the AI looks for local entity signals. It looks for a real business with a real address, real reviews, and real content that answers the question.

National brands cannot compete on local GEO signals. They do not have a Fayetteville address. They do not have reviews from people in Hope Mills. They do not have content about Cumberland County. This is your advantage — but only if your site passes the 5 checks above.

AI-referred visitors convert at 14-16%, compared to 1.76% for traditional organic search. These are not tire-kickers. They are people who asked an AI for a recommendation and got your name. That is the highest-intent lead you can get.

The Fastest Way to Pass All 5 Checks

You can do this yourself. The 5 checks above are free and take 30 minutes. Run them. See where you stand.

But if you run the audit and find gaps you are not sure how to fix — schema markup you do not know how to implement, content that needs restructuring, authority signals that need building — that is where my team and I come in.
